“More than 100 tons”: Agricultural innovation by Tereos

Focusing on the productivity of sugarcane in Brazil, the “More than 100 tons” program is a concentrate of innovation and technology.

Sugarcane processing represents the third largest source of revenue for Tereos. A major player in the sector in Brazil since 2000, Tereos chose to launch the “More than 100 tons” program at the end of 2017. As its name suggests, the program aims to produce 100 tons of sugar cane per hectare.

In 2017, Tereos processed over 20 million tons of sugarcane over 240 days. The main objective is therefore to increase agricultural production to 100 tons of sugarcane per hectare by 2020, compared with 83 tons at the end of 2017. Through the use of new technologies such as the collection and analysis of meteorological data, the intensive use of images from drones and satellites, computer models, and even the installation of mobile workstations closer to the fields, we aim to improve the quality of agricultural operations while respecting the sugarcane fields.

Agricultural innovation at the heart of Tereos’ DNA

As innovation is the essence of the “More Than 100 Tons” program, Tereos has chosen to partner with the research and engagement of Agri-Tech startups. These startups, young businesses or innovations that develop digital agriculture solutions are actively involved in providing sensors with advanced technology. This is all aimed at obtaining new data from the crops.

Tereos: a concentrate of technology to improve agriculture

Under the “More than 100 tons” program, 150 tablets have already been deployed in different units and serve as real mobile workstations. Employees have access to applications that allow them to communicate, collect data, access dashboards, and connect to a cloud (a networked data storage system) that digitizes all the information collected on the ground and in the field.

The function of these tools? To find and then exploit the factors that increase the productivity of agricultural yields. For Tereos, the goal is to better control our crops in order to improve performance over the long term.
